Treating the Infection and Damage of Periodontal Disease

Scaling and Root Planing

Often referred to as a deep cleaning, scaling and root planing is recommended to treat periodontitis. This minimally invasive procedure presents an alternative to more aggressive gum surgery.

Osseous/Flap Surgery

Osseous surgery is typically recommended if your infection is too far advanced to respond to scaling and root planing. During this gum surgery, Dr. Giraldo will access the roots of your teeth and underlying bone, cleaning and smoothing these areas to repair the damage caused by gum disease. She will also trim excess gum tissue, reshaping the gum line to encourage reattachment.

Gingivectomy

If scaling and root planing does not control your infection, you may need a gingivectomy. With this procedure, Dr. Giraldo will remove diseased tissue and reshape the gums around your teeth in order to reduce the deeper pockets that formed as a result of the bacteria.

Periodontal Maintenance

After you have been treated for periodontal disease, you will need periodontal maintenance visits every three to four months. At these appointments, our hygienist will clean your teeth both above and below the gum line, removing plaque and bacteria before they can affect your oral health. We also closely monitor your periodontal pocket depths at these visits.

Gum Grafting

If you have experienced gum recession due to periodontal disease, gum grafting can restore your smile. In this gum surgery, gum tissue is transferred from one area of the mouth to another.

Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)

Dr. Giraldo can place a biocompatible membrane, in conjunction with gum surgery, to encourage the regrowth of periodontal tissue.
